Short answer: A missing Google review may be delayed, removed, or affected by a profile merge, reinstatement or review restriction. Start by checking the listing and any notice from Google. Reviews that genuinely break Google's policies won't be restored, but Google acknowledges that legitimate reviews can be removed by mistake and directs businesses to support. The right next step depends on what happened.
The useful first move is to work out which situation you're in. The rest of this guide helps you do that.
First, check that the review is really missing
Before assuming the worst, rule out the simple explanations.
- Look at the right listing. Search for your business on Google Maps and confirm it's the profile you manage. If your business has two listings, a customer may have reviewed the other one.
- Sort by newest. On Maps, sort the reviews by newest so a recent review isn't buried among older ones.
- Check the timing. If the customer posted in the last few days, it may still be under review. Google says reviews are checked for policy compliance and "in some cases, this process might take a few days".
- Check your email. If Google plans to restrict your profile over fake reviews, it says it will notify the business owner by email. Look in the inbox (and spam folder) of the Google Account that manages the profile.
Why Google reviews disappear: the main causes
| What you're seeing | Possible explanation | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| A new review hasn't appeared yet | Policy checks may still be underway | Allow a few days, then check again |
| One or a few older reviews have gone | A policy removal, which may need checking for an error | Contact support if a legitimate review appears to have been removed by mistake |
| Reviews missing just after merging two profiles | Merged reviews can take a few days to show | Check again after a few days |
| Reviews gone after a suspended profile was reinstated | Reviews may be removed after reinstatement | Contact Google Business Profile support |
| A notice says new reviews are paused, or reviews are hidden | A business-level restriction or a protective pause | Read the notice; appeal an owner-violation restriction if you believe it is mistaken |
| A customer can't post at all | Older software is one possible cause | Updating Maps may help when older software is the cause; it is not a guaranteed fix |
Sources for the table: About missing or delayed reviews, mistaken review removals and Business Profile restrictions for policy violations (Google Business Profile Help).
1. The review is still being checked
Google checks reviews before and after they appear. A genuine review from a real customer may simply take a little longer. If it was only recently posted, allow a few days for the initial checks.
2. Google removed the review
Google uses automated systems and reports to remove reviews that break its rules, such as fake engagement, off-topic content or conflicts of interest. The scale is large: Google says it blocked or removed more than 292 million policy-violating reviews in 2025.
Reviews written by staff or family, and reviews gathered in exchange for a discount or freebie, can break Google's rules on conflicts of interest and incentives. Google also considers unusual review patterns when checking for manipulation. A burst alone does not establish a violation. Our guide to Google's review policy in 2026 explains what's allowed.
Reviews that genuinely violate Google's policies are not restored. But if a legitimate review appears to have been removed by mistake, Google says the business can contact support for assistance.
The person who wrote the review may also have a one-time appeal option in their Maps profile. Availability depends on the account and type of enforcement; it is not guaranteed for every reviewer. Google says a successful appeal can restore content removed in error. Editing or deleting the content after submitting an appeal cancels that appeal.
This author appeal is separate from a business asking Google to remove someone else's review, which we cover below.
3. You merged or reinstated a profile
- After a merge: Google says reviews from both profiles can take a few days to appear on Search and Maps.
- After a suspension is lifted: Google says reviews may be removed after a profile is reinstated. If that happens, its advice is to contact Google Business Profile support (the contact option is linked from the missing reviews help page).
4. Google has paused or hidden reviews on your profile
When Google determines that a business owner has violated its fake-engagement policy, it says it may, in addition to removing the violating reviews, apply restrictions such as:
- blocking new reviews or ratings for a set period;
- unpublishing existing reviews or ratings for a set period;
- showing a warning to customers that fake reviews were removed.
What you can do: If you believe Google imposed this owner-violation restriction incorrectly, use the appeal link on its restrictions help page. Explain the relevant facts honestly. Google re-reviews the profile and the context you provide, then tells you its decision.
A protective pause during a spam attack is a different situation. In April 2026, Google announced a global rollout that removes fake content, pauses new reviews, alerts the owner and shows a public explanation during sudden spam-review attacks. Check your profile and Google's notification to understand any pause affecting your business; the announcement does not guarantee a particular response or duration for every profile.
5. Reviews are switched off for your category
Google may temporarily disable reviews for some profiles or business categories. It also removes and disables reviews for profiles primarily categorised as general education schools for ages 6 to 18; universities, day care centres and swim schools are excluded. If your category is wrong, correct it.
What not to do when reviews go missing
- Don't organise replacement reviews. Check the reason for the missing reviews first, and don't ask people without a genuine customer experience to post. If the author has appealed a removal, they should not edit or delete that review while the appeal is pending.
- Don't replace lost reviews with reviews from staff, friends or family. That's a conflict of interest under Google's policies and risks a profile restriction.
- Don't offer a reward for a review. Discounts, gifts or entries into a draw in exchange for reviews break Google's rules. See Is review gating allowed? for the related rules on asking only happy customers.
- Don't pay for a promise to "restore" removed reviews. No third party can guarantee Google's decision. Use Google's support or eligible appeal route for a suspected mistake.
If a review you think is fake has not disappeared
The opposite problem is common too. If a review breaks Google's policies, you can report it through the Reviews Management Tool and track its status. If Google decides there's no violation, you get one appeal per review. Our guide on how to report a fake Google review walks through it.
Keep your review process consistent
- As a practical routine, invite honest feedback from customers consistently after the job or purchase. Google allows genuine, unincentivised requests; it does not prescribe a posting schedule.
- Use your own review link or QR code so customers land on the right profile.
- Keep incentives, staff reviews and selective asking out of your process entirely.
- Keep the profile accurate and follow the eligibility rules to reduce avoidable problems. If reviews disappear after reinstatement, contact support.
- Reply to reviews regularly so you notice changes quickly.
Hypothetical example: A small bookkeeping firm notices its review count drop from 48 to 41 overnight. The missing reviews were posted after a staff member asked friends who had not used the service to "help out". Reviews without a genuine customer experience break Google's rules. The firm stops that practice and switches to sending every client the same neutral review invitation after each completed engagement.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Google review take to appear? Often quickly, but Google says its policy checks can take a few days in some cases.
Will Google tell me when it removes a review? Google says it will email the business owner before applying a business-level review restriction. For an individual missing review, check the review's status and any notices rather than assuming that the business will receive an email.
Can I get removed reviews back? Reviews that genuinely break policy are not restored. For a suspected mistaken removal or reviews lost after reinstatement, contact Business Profile support. The author may have a removal-appeal option, depending on eligibility. Business owners can separately appeal an incorrectly imposed review restriction.
Do missing reviews mean my profile is suspended? Not necessarily. Check whether you can still manage the profile and whether it shows publicly. If you've been suspended, see Google Business Profile suspended? How to find out why and appeal.
